Unicef staff member from 1974 to 1994. worked in New Delhi till 1981-planning officer; Addis Ababa 1981- 1986 - programme planning officer and then representative; New York - Chief, MENA section 1986-1990 and Chief, Urban and CEDC section 1990-1994.
Since retirement have moved back to Bangalore, India. Active in Child Rights, Urban Development and HIV/AIDS issues working with several NGOs.
Both son and daughter in the USA, and they/we visit often. One grand-daughter, now a delicious three year old.

Difficult to choose but perhaps: During the 1983-86 famine emergency in Ethiopia, on a field visit to an area where we had supported local project through the Cash for Work scheme that JPG suggested, there was a huge slogan on the hill from which the gravity spring was flowing to the terraced fields of one peasant. It said that the revolution was the same year [1984]. when i exclaimed that he had the date wrong; it was a good ten years earlier, he replied ' Oh, that was not true freedom; this year when we could irrigate our fields we have true freedom - from want' . it was a sincere tribute to our support and I felt so uplifted.

Began career in UNICEF effective 1963 and risen thru ranks until 1997 to depart as senior UN official. Blessed to work under leadership of great humanbeings like James P Grant and served children related programmes in Africa (10 years), India and Far East (13 years), Arab world (4 yrs) and HQ (7 yrs) in all departments of operations. Since retirement, privileged to work on short-term assignments almost every year in Africa, Arab world and Far East; great humane experience during Mozambique flood emergency/GAVI introduction (I think, in 2000) and Ethiopian emergency in 2006.
