Difficult to choose but perhaps: During the 1983-86 famine emergency in Ethiopia, on a field visit to an area where we had supported local project through the Cash for Work scheme that JPG suggested, there was a huge slogan on the hill from which the gravity spring was flowing to the terraced fields of one peasant. It said that the revolution was the same year [1984]. when i exclaimed that he had the date wrong; it was a good ten years earlier, he replied ' Oh, that was not true freedom; this year when we could irrigate our fields we have true freedom - from want' . it was a sincere tribute to our support and I felt so uplifted.
